Eggs can be used in many ways; cooking, frying, boiling…Introducing MMG’s tax team. The egg head campaign focuses on putting a spotlight on our tax team to highlight the importance of tax and the skills that our team have to offer. As we’ve already introduced you to our senior tax team, we only thought it was fair to introduce our newest tax eggsperts, starting with Accounts and Tax manager, Ryan!
What has been your journey at MMG?
“I joined MMG just last year as part of the merger with Finlaysons, where I’ve worked since 2014; I can’t believe how fast the time has gone by. I started my accountancy training straight out of school. It was natural for me to gravitate toward accounting due to my passion for numbers. My sister also worked at Finlaysons, so I inherited an interest in the field. Soon after starting my traineeship, I started studying to become a qualified accountant. Luckily, all the hard work paid off, and I’m now ACCA qualified.
“As I progressed in my role as an accountant, I’ve had the opportunity to meet many clients who were all interested in one thing – tax! It was obvious to me that this was the next step, although it meant more late nights spent studying. I started my studies in April 2021 to become a Chartered Tax Advisor (CTA); now, all that’s left is to pass my final exam in November.
“Studying to become a CTA has been refreshing as it’s relevant to my role at MMG. From filing tax returns to advising clients, I’ve had the opportunity to translate the skills I’ve learned straight into the workplace.
“At MMG, we’re lucky to have help from tax consultancy Croner for specialised advice. Although you wouldn’t think so, tax can be very varied, from the ever-evolving laws to the customer queries, there definitely isn’t a boring day at the office.”
Why did you choose to train in accounting instead of going to university?
“I was only 16 when starting my accountancy journey, although this hasn’t held me back as I’ve been able to progress in my role and gain accounting qualifications with the support of my team. As the firm is based in Perth, I’ve been lucky enough to stay local and complete my studies virtually. This has had its perks, which meant I could continue learning throughout the pandemic, and my tutors are only an email away.
“As a trainee, I could get to work straight away, and it had always appealed to me that I could make money while gaining qualifications. I’ve also had the chance to pick up valuable skills in the workplace along the way!”
What do you look forward to in the future at MMG?
“I’m looking forward to passing my final exam and putting my knowledge to good use. I’m pleased that my skills will add value to our client’s experience and help them achieve their accounting goals.
“At MMG, good things are coming; watch this space. I can’t wait to continue my learning as time goes on and see where my journey will take me.”
